About Kimmy

Digital artist, lover of bugs, nature and spooky things. Obsessed with making the world more colourful.

Fun with Acrylics!

I bought some half-fancy brushes when I was feeling down one day with the thought that I would give painting a real go this time. I have dabbled over the years, but always hated everything I did and would give up (for a short time and then would try again).

I’ve really been trying to stop expecting everything to perfect when I paint. I’ve had to loosen up and just let things flow and look… how they look. I think, because I have mostly done digital art, it is hard to let go of that control and perfectionism. So, here are a couple of paintings I have done over the last few weeks. The bottom two paintings are for sale at my Etsy Store. Let me know what you think!

Australian Bird Art

I’ve started a series of Australian birds and these Top End birds are the first three in the series. They are a little different to my usual style, but I’m really digging them. I enjoyed playing around with textures and background noise to add depth to the drawings and make them more interesting. I also used more sharp angles instead of my usual curves and I love the results.

I think my favourite is the Black-necked Stork (more commonly known as the Jabiru), but the Bush Stone-curlew gives me a warm and fuzzy feeling, with its funny long legs. Click on the images to enlarge them. If you want to download any of these as a print, please head over to my Etsy store.

Frida Kahlo

“I paint flowers so they will not die” – Frida Kahlo

Some facts about Frida:

  • Frida Kahlo was a Mexican painter who created many self portraits with themes of pain, love and identity.
  • She suffered from chronic pain due to contracting polio as a child and a serious bus accident when she was 18.
  • She had a tumultuous relationship with her husband, Diego, and both had affairs throughout their marriage.
  • Frida was bisexual and often had affairs with women.
  • It’s really hard to write “Frida” without putting a “y” at the end.
